Telegram 2369, December 23, 1944
"AZUSA. BERG to 106 and DIX only. Brought FLUTE deuterium for his cyclotron also latest English and French scientific books.
Timed entry Switzerland to attend Heisenberg lecture and discussion Dec. 18 Zurich University Physical Institute sitting behind WEISZACKER, 20 present including FLUTE, WENZEL, FIERZ.
Subject theoretical physics. FLUTE explained that: A. HEISENBERG has now found frame for new theory of elementary particles in which relativity and quantum relations are coordinated to avoid quantities to infinity. B. The frame itself is not yet filled in. C. lt is called ETA matrix theory.
FLUTE places following personnel in Hechingen with activities: HEISENBERG-cosmic rays; MOLIERE--HEISENBERG's pupil; LAUE--electronic diffraction; WEISZACKER -- cosmogeny; HAHN there but not working on Azusa. CLUSIUS in Switzerland three months ago told FLUTE separation U235 isotope absolutely hopeless after experiments Munich with U fluorite. However, at present FLUTE believes CLUSIUS and DICKEL are in Berlin area on Azusa.
....
FLUTE predicts at least two years probably ten for successful Azusa.
HEISENBERG confided to FLUTE Hitler was seen by friend, healthy and working about Dec. 1 also said desperate Nazi Party control over German scientists who doubtful politically. WEISZACKER remained in Switzerland until recently perhaps for surveillance HEISENBERG.
More conferences with FLUTE Wednesday, the 27th. Complete pouch to follow."
Und in einem weiteren Dokument:
"Headquarters informed DULLES and BERG on Dec. 29 that Tel. 2369 had been very helpful."
Goudsmit relates "I had kept a small cylinder of heavy hydrogen in Strasbourg and I gave it to Moe and said, 'Bring that to our friend Scherrer, who needs it. And Moe did it and that made Scherrer very happy. In turn, Scherrer helped us greatly."
Dieter
